Our Family Legacy

Who would have thought that the births of two individuals would spark such a remarkable legacy? “Papa” Henry Lee, born in 1872, and “Momma” Mattie Lee Smith, born in 1880, united two families that laid the foundation for the family dynasty we cherish today -the Lee-Smith family.


This is part of our rich history that shaped our family. Together, let’s celebrate the enduring legacy of Henry and Mattie and the many generations that followed. Discover our roots and get to know the incredible journey of the Lee-Smith family!

"Papa" and "Momma"

"Papa" Henry Lee

  • Born in 1872 in Lowndes County, Alabama
  • Had three brothers (Louis, Jessie & Robert) and four sisters (Mattie, Matilda, Nora & Callie) 
  • Was 8 years older than his sister, Mattie Lee 
  • Married Fannie Lizzie and fathered 6 children
  • Married Louvenia Smith after the death of his first wife, Fannie Lizze
  • Fathered Arthur Lee (affectionately known as "Scow”)
  • Spent most of his working life as a sharecropper working for Mr. Jessie Haynes 
  • Even in declining health, helped to raise some of his grandchildren (Norman, Walter, Pat, Mary Ann)
  • When his health declined, he moved to Montgomery, down the street from Claudia Mae
  • Died in Montgomery, Alabama in 1956

"Momma" Mattie Lee Smith

  • Born March 6, 1880 in Lowndes County, Alabama 
  • Had twelve children and raised them in Gordonville, Alabama
  • Her children were Pearl, Lucy, Robert, Evelyn, Charlie, Flora, Arthur, Mary Emma, Mammie, George, Addison and Elizabeth. 
  • She was very creative and could always find something to make a meal.
  • Never allowed her children to go to bed hungry
  • Was known for always having a "teacake" in her pocket
  • Insisted that all of her children attend church
  • Prepared her children to deal with life by teaching them how to cook, clean, wash, and iron as young as 6 years old
  • Her youngest child was Elizabeth (Liza) Webb who lived to be 91 and passed on July 20, 2013 in  Cleveland, Ohio. She was brought back to Birmingham, where she was funeralized.
  • Died November 22, 1955
